VAP Visiting Artist Program: In conversation with Chiara Bandino and Francesco

Chiara Bandino and Francesco Biasi discuss the Visiting Artist Program (VAP) at Fonderia 20.9, exploring the residency’s open-ended structure, the role of experimentation, and what makes a strong application.

Fonderia is bringing back VAP. How did it start, and why did you decide to relaunch it? "The program began in 2019, almost by accident. An artist friend asked to test an installation in our gallery—not as a traditional show, but as a space to experiment. Her idea was strong, and it felt natural to involve the public, opening up the process to feedback and discussion. Seeing its impact, we developed VAP into a structured format, offering artists a space to explore, test, and evolve their ideas in real time.".

This residency allows artists to develop work in progress within a gallery. What's the value of creating in a setting that invites interaction? "There’s something really special about being able to work in a gallery without the usual expectations that come with a final exhibition. Firstly it removes the pressure of having everything figured out beforehand. Instead, artists can play with the space, experiment with different formats, and make changes on the spot. Another key aspect is interaction. Working in a gallery, rather than alone in a studio, gives artists immediate feedback from visitors, fellow creatives, and our team".

The residency ends with a showcase—how is it structured, and why does public engagement matter? "VAP is a short, immersive residency where artists have access to the gallery and studio, allowing them to work freely and adapt their project. Unlike traditional residencies, the gallery stays open, letting visitors witness the process and engage with the artist. It concludes with the Epilogue, a final moment of reflection rather than a formal opening, where the artist discusses their process, and gathers feedback—reinforcing the idea that art is as much about the journey as the result".

Any tips for artists who want to make their submission stand out? "The most important thing is to make sure your proposal aligns with what VAP is about. This isn’t a residency for presenting a finished project— it’s about experimentation, process, and responding to the space. Be clear and concise."
