Back-and-Forth: A Conversation with Rocco Venezia on the New Mentorship Program

Fonderia 20.9 is launching Back-and-Forth, a free mentorship program for emerging photographers. Taking place online, the program offers tailored guidance, professional development, and a final group exhibition in 2026. Rocco Venezia, Artistic Director of Fonderia 20.9, shares insights on its vision and structure.

Why offer a free mentorship program?

"Access to mentorship in photography is often tied to financial barriers. We wanted to remove that obstacle, ensuring that artistic growth isn’t dictated by economic constraints. Fonderia 20.9 has always been about fostering research, exchange, and development—this program continues that mission."

How does the program’s structure benefit participants?

"We designed it to be dynamic. Group sessions encourage peer exchange, one-on-one meetings offer deeper, tailored guidance, and studio visits with guest artists introduce fresh perspectives. Artistic development isn’t linear—this structure allows participants to move between introspection and collaboration."

How do the mentors' backgrounds shape the experience?

"Each of us brings something different. Francesco focuses on production and exhibition-making, Chiara on publishing and editorial projects, and I on visual storytelling. Together, we provide a broad but complementary mentorship that adapts to each participant’s needs."

What impact does the final exhibition have?

"It’s about more than just displaying work—it’s about preparing artists for professional opportunities. From refining their projects to engaging with an audience, the experience builds confidence, visibility, and networks that can open doors beyond the program."

What makes a strong application?

"We look for photographers with a compelling artistic vision, whether their project is in its early stages or just an idea backed by a strong portfolio. Clarity of purpose, curiosity, and openness to experimentation stand out."
